Southeast Washington
Where they were
Every place in this archive that sits in the corner of Washington between the Snake and the Columbia, and over the Oregon line to Hermiston. Two generations, seventy years apart, on much the same ground: the Williams family homesteading Pataha Prairie in 1874, and the Ascherls at the ordnance depot, then Pullman, then Hanford. Select any marker for its coordinates and a link out to the modern map.
Williams family 1873–1920
The pioneer generation. Arrived by steamer at Wallula in November 1873 and homesteaded on Pataha Prairie.
Ascherl & McCanse 1942–1990s
The twentieth-century generation. The ordnance depot at eighteen, college at Pullman on the GI Bill, then the reactors at Hanford.
Geographic context
Landforms and towns that orient the other two layers.
Approximate
Located from a description in a source rather than a recorded coordinate. Dot size follows how often the archive mentions the place.
Counties from the US Census cartographic boundary files; rivers from Natural Earth. Both public domain, drawn into the page itself — this map loads no tiles and calls no third-party service. The Palouse and the Hanford reservation are shaded to their approximate extents; neither has an edge this map should pretend to know exactly.
